To get us all started with our visitors tales of ghostly encounters; we received this story from Christopher here in the UK. Christopher got in touch with us after reading the tale A Cottage Full of Whys, about a haunted cottage. Here is his story.
We used to live in Bristol when I was quite young. The house was a small terrace in the middle of a row and I lived there with my younger sister and parents. Although the house was small, I did have my own bedroom and that was where I would hear strange voices. I know you might think I was hearing people downstairs or the neighbours through the walls but it wasn’t that.
What I would hear, was when I was in bed getting ready to try a get to sleep. I would hear voices softly talking really close to my ears, many voices all at once. I hadn’t got to sleep because it usually happened when I had just got in to bed and had only just shut my eyes. It seemed to happen just as I was adjusting to the silence in the room. You know that moment when you put your head down on the pillow and close your eyes.
The voices would become scary. They would be many, sometimes shouting really loud to be heard over the other voices. They would fade in and out many times, then I would just hear one voice talking and then it would suddenly shout in mid sentence. They all use to do that, begin by talking softly and then start shouting loud. It was terrifying listening to it as a kid.
One way I used to try to shut them out was to make some noise by rocking my head side to side on the pillow in order to get to sleep. If I didn’t focus on the silence first thing in the room and rocked my head side to side on the pillow, I wouldn’t hear them and unbelievably I could get to sleep that way.
I know the voices were not coming from downstairs or neighbours, they came from within the room and came really close to try and scare me, which they often did.
Well, thanks Christopher for your ghostly encounter and I hope we can get more spooky tales from our visitors to the website.
Here is how you can submit your tales to us at The Ghostly World of Jonathan Harker.
